Presepe Vivente of Monterosso Almo

The Presepe Vivente of Monterosso Almo, one of the oldest and most renowned in Sicily, takes place every year in the village’s characteristic Matrice quarter. This event offers visitors a unique experience, immersing them in the Christmas atmosphere of yesteryear through the re-enactment of ancient traditions and trades.

On 26 and 29 December 2024, and on 1, 5 and 6 January 2025, the route of the living nativity scene will unfold through the narrow streets of the district, where more than 150 figures, dressed in traditional costumes, recreate scenes of daily life in Palestine two thousand years ago. 

Ancient trades, such as the curdari, u fìrraru, u cirnituri, a lavannara and scarparu, are relived, offering visitors an authentic glimpse of the culture and life of yesteryear.

The route unfolds in an exciting journey that, through scenes of daily life, handicrafts and traditions, envelops the visitor in an atmosphere of great charm. The sound of bagpipes marks the approach to the grotto of the Nativity, the heart of the crib, where the scene of the Nativity, with the Magi, the donkey, the ox, Mary, Joseph and the Child, represents the culmination of an experience that combines faith, culture and tradition.

The Presepe Vivente of Monterosso Almo is an event that attracts numerous visitors every year, eager to discover the history, traditions and culture of one of Italy’s most beautiful villages, in an atmosphere of great emotion and spirituality.
