Camping in Sicily

If you decide to stay out in the fresh air in the woods around Etna, in the province of Catania, there are campsites in Nicolosi and in Milo. Alternatively, if you stay in the campsites of Acireale, Calatabiano and Mascali, you can camp by the seashore and still not be far from Etna, or from Catania with its art and its nightlife.

You’ll find other campsites in the Siracusa area, in Fontane Bianche near Gallina beach, or a stone’s throw from Marzamemi beach and the Riserva Naturale di Vendicari, close to the vineyards of the famous “Nero d’Avola” and to Noto, the epicentre of Sicilian Baroque.

Go south as far as Ragusa and here you can camp at Punta Braccetto, Punta Secca, Avola, and further on still in Portopalo di Capo Passero. Migratory birds stop here on their journey south or north according to the season. It’s an enchanting area, Europe’s most southern point.

Camping in such natural scenery is an intense experience. However, Ispica, Scicli, Santa Croce Camerina, Pozzallo , Marina di Ragusa, Sampieri and Marina di Modica should not be forgotten.

There’s another campsite in Butera, in the province of Caltanissetta. This is in a flat, heavily wooded area by the sea which has with almost exclusively sandy beaches, the Punta delle Due Rocche.

In the Agrigento area, you can “camp out” in Porto Empedocle, Siculiana, Eraclea Minoa, Ribera, Sciacca and Menfi. In addition, the campsites on the islands of Lampedusa and Linosa, both reachable from Porto Empedocle, offer camping fans a good alternative to staying within four stone walls.

In the Trapani area, there are campsites in San Vito Lo Capo, famous for its marvellous beach and for the Cous Cous Festival in June and September. There’s an other in Castellammare del Golfo, an old seaside village with a seafront full of traditional fish restaurants, and others in Castelvetrano, on Marinella beach in Triscina, or in Marsala, a small town full of history and good wine.

In the Aegadian Islands you can camp in Favignana, near to a bay with really white sand, whose vegetation makes it a truly unique place to stay.

Around Palermo, there are campsites in Balestrate, Cinisi, Sferracavallo and Isola delle Femmine, a few kilometres from the city. Going eastwards, there are others in Cefalù, Finale di Pollina and Campofelice di Roccella.

Following the beautiful coast towards Messina, there’s camping in Gioiosa Marea, Patti, Piraino, Oliveri, Terme Vigliatore, Letojanni and Taormina.

Finally, there’s camping in the Aeolian Islands, on the island of Lipari.
