Naturism in Sicily

Detail

A love for ecology, being in harmony with nature, a life philosophy, curiosity, or just an experience to try at least once in a lifetime: these are the many faces of naturism, un unstoppable movement.

The following is a list of its prinicipal sites in Sicily.

Firstly, Foce del Fiume Platani in Eraclea Minoa (near Agrigento), a 5-kilometre-long beach (from Capo Bianco to the mouth of the river) with very fine golden sand and white limestone cliffs overlooking the sea.

Agrigento also has the nearby Funcitella beach, within the Riserva Naturale Orientata di Torre Salsa, a nature reserve managed by the WWF.

Capo Feto, one of most well-known naturist beaches, is a few kilometres from Mazara del Vallo and is within the Riserva Naturale di Capo Feto: the natural contours of the beach, with its wild sandy shore and surrounding unspoilt Mediterranean scrub, guarantee discretion and tranquillity.

Then there’s the Casello 41 beach in the Riserva Naturale della Foce del Belice, between Castelvetrano and Menfi (which is especially recommended in the low season).

In Palermo, the stretch of coast most frequented by naturists is that in the Riserva di Capo Gallo. There are two naturist areas in the reserve: the section between the lighthouse and Barcarello (Punta Tara) and the central part, entered from the Sferracavallo side, shortly after the Avamposto.

A few kilometres from Palermo, near Cefalù, there’s the stretch of Salinelle beach between the private beach of the Hotel Costa Verde and Capo Playa in the plain of Lascari.

In the province of Messina, there’s a sheltered beach with a peaceful atmosphere, and a spectacular panoramic view, in the seaside resort of Rocce Bianche near Taormina.

Likewise close to Taormina, naturists are welcome on Forza D’Agrò beach in Contrada Parrino, the first official naturism oasis in Sicily.

On the Tyrranhian side, less than a hundred metres from the small lakes of Tindari, you’ll find the beaches of San Saba and Giampilieri on Marinello beach.

Set within the Riserva Naturale di Vendicari, between Noto and Marzamemi, there’s Marianelli beach, a magical location with gentle sand dunes covered by rare flora.

Pantelleria is also a destination for naturists. There are various cliffs and coves which are often not easily overlooked. These include Kattibuale, the coves of Punta Gattara, Laghetto delle Ondine, Scarpetta di Cenerentola and the Arco dell’Elefante.
